Top 15 College Football games of the year

The top 15 college football games of the year are counted down.

By

My plan was to make a top 10 football games of the year, both pro and college. Then I sat down to look at all the great college games, and there was no way to choose just 10 of those, so I made the top 15 list.

15. Georgia 26 @ Alabama 23 (ot): Alabama trailed the whole game, but made a 10-point comeback in the last half of the fourth quarter to tie the game. Georgia got back into field goal range, but missed the winning kick. After a Bama fielg goal, it took the Bulldogs one play to strike on a touchdown pass for the win.

14. Illinois 28 @ Ohio State 21: In a game you all remember, the two teams went back and forth in the first quarter and then the defenses dominated most of the game from there. OSU couldn't stop the spread in the end as Illinois killed the clock for much of the fourt quarter in a huge upset.

13. South Florida 26 @ Auburn 23 (ot): This was the game that started all of the upsets. Brandon Cox turned the ball over time and time again, but all South Florida could do was miss field goals. After an overtime field goal by Auburn, South Florida connected on a touchdown pass that changed the season.

12. Oregon State 31 @ California 28: An injured Nate Longshore led to a backup QB making the mistake of the year for the Bears. After a nice comeback, all the Bears had to do was spike the ball to force ot. Instead they tried to rush the field goal unit on, which was hopeless. The Bears never recoverd.

11. Oklahoma 24 @ Colorado 27: I still don't know how Colorado won this game. Oklahoma basically collapsed in the second half, allowing 17 fourth quarter points, including the game-winning kick as time expired.

10. Texas Tech 45 @ Oklahoma State 49: In one of the most exciting games of the season, both teams traded punches all game long. After an OSU touchdown with under two minutes left, Tech drove back down the field, but lost when the nation's top receiver, Michael Crabtree, dropped a touchdown pass to win the game.

9. Arkansas 38 @ Alabama 41: The Tide rolled out to a 21-0 first quarter lead only to see Darren McFadden carry the hogs back in the game. Arkansas finally cleard Bama late, but not late enough as the Tide drove down the field for the winning touchdown with seconds left.

8. Auburn 20 @ Florida 17: The great list of SEC games continues with a shocker. Auburn jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half, but Florida wouldn't give up and tied the game late. Auburn kicked the game winning field goal, but Florida called a time out. They couldn't delay the inevitable, as the Tigers made the kick the second time as well.

7. LSU 37 @ Kentucky 43 (3ot) Both teams played several great games. LSU didn't last long at No. 1 as UK fought back in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. After a Kentucky score in the third OT, LSU couldn't convert on four consecutive running plays, as the mayhem began.

6. Louisville 34 @ Kentucky 40: The game that sent Louisville falling. Kentucky looked good early, but the Cardinals battled back and took the lead. A blown coverage late in the game put UK on the map for the year.

5. Tennessee 52 @ Kentucky 50 (4 ot) I wanted to put this game No. 1, but I was afraid of being bias, considering only the SEC was at stake. Known for blowing big leads, UT did it again, this time a 24-7 lead at the half. UK came down at the end with a chance to win, but UT held it out of the end zone in a goal to go situation and the Wildcats could only tie it. A blocked field goal kept the Vols alive in the second overtime, and a missed two-point conversion by UK gave the Vols the SEC East.

4. Auburn 24 @ LSU 30: LSU overcame a 10-point deficit at the half to stay alive for the title. Auburn was unable to ice the game and it looked like LSU was going to kick a game-winning field goal. That is when Matt Flynn thre wa touchdown pass with a second left to add some more excitement to the game.

3. Appalachian State 34 @ Michigan 32: In what was the upset of the year for a few weeks, the Wolverines clawed back from a 28-17 halftime deficit to take a 32-31 lead late. ASU responded and kicked a field goal with 26 seconds left for the apparant victory. Michigan wouldn't give up as a long pass play set up a field goal. It was blocked, and so went the season for Michigan.

2. Stanford 24 @ USC 23: The game wasn't very exciting as USC held the lead throughout and everyone was wondering when it would pull away. That never happened, however, as Stanford took advantage with two fourth down conversions for the win. The greatest upset ever for the 41-point underdogs.

1. Arkansas 50 @ LSU 48: It looked like LSU blew its title game chances after this loss. A penalty on a touchdown proved to be the difference in the game. The Tigers couldn't match Arkansas' conversion in the end after the Hogs needed a fourth down conversion to stay alive earlier.
