Published April 24, 2009 Browns Looking To Press The Reset Button Once AgainRemember when you were a kid playing your Nintendo game center or your Sony Play Station? What does everyone do when your system freezes up? You do what I used to do, you keep turning it off and on to reset the system hoping and praying that the restart will fix everything. We all eventually find out that it does not always work out for the best. Now I ask one simple question. Why in the world do the Cleveland Browns continue to press that reset button? It all started back with Butch Davis, the old Miami U. product. As soon as he became head coach he could not wait to get his players from Miami in there. It did not matter if they had trouble on or off the field. I feel that the thought of winning was an afterthought. Yes I know what you're thinking, you can't wait to shout out that Butch Davis took the Browns to the playoffs. You're right, he did. Remember, there were many teams that had to lose for Browns to make the playoffs. They needed to beat a very good Atlanta team in the last week of the regular season just to make the playoffs. The Browns went 9-7 that year. There were not too many Browns fans that were happy with a 9-7 record and a first round wild card loss to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers team. Davis' record was 24-35 and 0-1 in playoffs. Not impressive and reset number one. I am not even going to talk about Terry Robiskie due to the fact he only coached 5 games and went 1-4. Then comes one of the kings from the "great" Bill Belichick's staff. Remember, the great defensive mastermind from the Super Bowl wins, Romeo Crennel? Romeo comes in, cleans house and brings in what he says is his guys. It seemed like magic. The Browns made some great picks in the draft. Things were looking great. Browns fan could not wait to get the season started. They had high hopes. Unfortunately Romeo did not find his Juliet. The only thing he found was a 24-40 record with ZERO playoff appearances. Nothing to be proud of, reset number two. Now here comes the new guy Mr. Eric Mangini. They call him Mangenius. Really, geniuses, come on. Did anyone watch the last four games of the Jet's 2008 season? It looked like a genie in a bottle could not have helped the Jets. He walks in the door and starts kicking people out. Not resigning key players like Jones, trading very good proven players like Winslow and releasing Jurevicius. It is like Mangini is trying to make a contending football team out of a bag of shake and bake without the key ingredients of pro bowl talent . Rumors from Cleveland suggest that he still is looking to move Anderson and/or Quinn to any team willing to trade a first round pick. Should the Browns lose one of these quarterbacks they are banking that the latest "great" USC mold of quarterbacks Mark Sanchez to be their savior. Hey Bengal fans, how is that working for you? It just does not make sense. It is like starting over and over and over again. Scary, isn't it?. Reset number 3. So far it is looking like history is going to keep repeating itself. You can keep resetting your game system only so many times before you just have to try to fix what you have. I am a teacher, I don't get to draft who I want to teach, I get to coach with what I have. Why can't the Browns just try that once? Don't get me wrong, I love my Browns. I get excited when the draft comes. I watch every single game I can. It is just frustrating to go into another season hoping the Browns will get 4-6 wins. It hurts, it really hurts. Browns, don't reset again.
