Ron dreams of his favorite winter vacation spots, wherever it's warmer than Nebraska...
Coming home from a basketball game last night I drove past a time/temperature sign that showed the Fremont (Nebraska) temperature as -6. This morning on the drive to work it read -13. That is the coldest it has been since 1995. At lunch it was a balmy -2. As Sgt. Hulka in the movie Stripes so eloquently stated “I’m getting too old for this shit!”
Unfortunately my 401(K) says I am not going to be retiring anytime soon. But if I could, I would take a sports fan journey through the winter months, always going where it is a lot warmer than Nebraska.
Starting off January 1st I would either take in a Nebraska bowl game, or the Rose Bowl. Hey, the Huskers are on their way back with Ohio native Bo Pelini at the realm. However, if the Big Red did not make it to a "big" bowl game, the Rose Bowl in sunny California has always been on my bucket list. Later, the zoo in San Diego and golf in Palm Springs would be nice - it is my dream, and in my dream I have lots of money.
I am a big auto race fan. Ohio has some great tracks and I will write more about them as the racing season nears, but in February, the only place to race is Florida. I think a few weeks at Tampa’s East Bay Raceway Park would be time well spent. So would a week at Volusia County Speedway, just west of Daytona. I have always been told that the best place to watch the Daytona 500 is in front of your TV, but I wouldn’t mind going to the big track to take in the Twin 150’s on the Thursday prior to the 500.
You might hate me for this, but I am a big Duke basketball fan. To me Duke plays basketball the way it was meant to be played. So, any winter escape of mine would also have to include some time in Durham, NC visiting Cameron Indoor Stadium and watching Duke and the crazies in action.
Come March and it is out to Arizona to take in the Chicago Cubs spring training. A few weeks of baseball, baseball, and more baseball is icing on this vacation trip.
I may never have the resources to take such a trip, but if I ever do, I am a man with a plan. Thanks for stopping by.
