Published September 28, 2009 Random Rumblings In Sports, Sept. 28So… the Buckeyes are back in the Top Ten. And the defense seems to be working now, and obviously the offense is starting to give them a little breathing room. I hope to God we never see rain like that again this season. Regular Tressel-Ball can be hard enough for a fan to watch. One-dimensional, no-passing Tressel-Ball? That’s just torture. Not “Watching the Browns” torture, but torture nonetheless. "You have to love a defense that gets two straight shutouts." And while, yes, it may be Toledo and Illinois they did it against, you have to love a defense that gets two straight shutouts. Shutouts are never easy to get under any circumstances. Even Youngstown State managed to score on defenses with much more experience the previous two years. Take it with a grain of salt, but two shutouts are two shutouts. Michigan is crawling up the polls. Ummmm… really? Ohio State drops in the polls after shutting out Toledo (yes, it’s a weak opponent on a light schedule, but c’mon…), but Michigan climbs after surviving against Indiana (on an obscenely blown call, I might add)? BCS Spoiler…? I know it’s still extremely early, but is anyone looking at Boise State, and the fact that they’re in the Top 5 now? They are in sniffing distance of a date in Pasadena for the Title Game. "Boise State will be 13-0 by close-of-business on December 5, and from there, someone will be crying." Do I think they’ll actually make the Title Game? I’d like to be able to say there’s no chance in hell. However, you couldn’t pave a road to 13-0 (how did they get a 13th game, anyway?) any better than Boise State has. They beat the one ranked team on their schedule in Week 1, and they play in the WAC. Boise State will be 13-0 by close-of-business on December 5, and from there, someone will be crying – whether it’s Boise State whining about being unbeaten and not playing for it all, or it’s a one-loss team that’s not in the game because they somehow get left behind by BSU. I just hope it’s not the Buckeyes. How rough is it to be Bobby Bowden right now? South Florida, Bobby? REALLY?!?! Almost… again!!! Why does it always seem like Ohio Bobcats Coach Frank Solich is saving that “Upset Magic” for later? No one expected that 14-7 lead on Tennessee to last, but really… someone in Ohio has got to beat an SEC team at some point. Some momentum would have been nice… there are no real gimmes on that MAC schedule, Coach. Well, Miami and Ball State, but that’s it. I want to go to a bowl game again, Coach. Don’t make fans wait another 38 years… I’ll be too old to fly. I want to be a sports contract consultant for the Browns. I realized yesterday after some research (because, apparently, I hadn’t paid too much attention before) that the Browns signed Eric Mangini for four years. I’m sure I’m not the only Browns fan who thinks he can’t bear to wait that long for Mangini to get fired. "It’s time to [...] build a decent offensive line, so they can protect Tim Tebow when [the Browns] get to draft him first." So for future reference, I think any contract term longer than two years for a Browns coach should come with a stipulation: You start 0-3, the team deducts one year from the deal. ‘Nuff said. For heaven’s sake, Coach, one sports columnist is already calling for Josh Cribbs to start. Brady Quinn is about as far from a pro quarterback as one can be, but he and Derek Anderson have proven that Quinn is definitely the lesser of two evils. Get well soon, Tim Tebow. We’ve got you on speed-dial already, pal. Finally!!! The season I like to call the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is almost upon us: Sports’ longest season. After that first taste of the playoffs – however brief – it is almost time for the Blue Jackets to drop the puck. I can’t wait. I think our guys look pretty good this year. Rough schedule in the first week, but I still like it. Two for Tweeting. I agree about the polls. They're totally whacked this year, even more so than usual. No way Michigan should be as high as they are.
Some other teams that might make it interesting are Cinn, TCU, and Huston. All of these teams have already played their tough teams on their schedule. There could be a number of teams with perfect records at the end. We need a playoff. This is getting to be silly. That way we can find who is #1 on the field like every other sport does.
VERY interesting points, Ryan. I think Houston could presumably go unbeaten. I doubt the BCS would ever take a C-USA team seriously, though. I think Houston would wind up in a Boise- or Utah-type situation there: MAYBE a BCS bowl, but not Pasadena. TCU is a possibility, the problem is, they DO still have Utah and BYU on the slate. That, and they ARE, after all, TCU. :) Cincinnati has the best shot, because (and someone needs to look into this) the Big East is miraculously still a BCS conference. Even if Coaches had them in the top two at the end, I think the computers would hurt them.
