First and Ten -- Monday Night Football (9/22), and Last Friday Too!

mf
Marion-Franklin keeps chugging on.

Monday Night Football -- Red Devils' Fury (9/22) -- Marion-Franklin 48, Africentric 8 -- The Africentric Nubians (4-1, 1-1), highly rated in small school Division VI, probably saw this one coming and couldn't do anything about it. Africentric came into this storm postponed City League game undefeated, but knowing they outfit only 29 players. Opponent Marion-Franklin (5-0, 2-0) is a highly touted Division II school and the difference was obvious Monday night as the Red Devils opened a 41-8 halftime lead that was insurmountable. Marion-Franklin's Tyrell Massey had over 200 yards of offense before the half out of a team total 435 in the first half. QB Verlon Reed threw for 142 yards and six different Red Devils scored. Walnut Ridge 45, West 17 --- West (1-4, 0-2) gave it their best in this City League South game last night, taking a 10-7 first quarter lead when Derek Sizemore caught a 5 yard TD pass from Eric Stewart, but it wasn't enough to outlast visiting Walnut Ridge (3-2, 1-1). This game was a great match of talented QB's as Stewart threw for 258 on 18 completions and as Walnut Ridge's Alvin Busbee stole the show with 4 TD passes. Whetstone 44, East 14 -- We'll highlight this one because the first half was interesting and because the rest of the City League North action ended in sheer blowouts. Whetstone (4-1, 1-1) took a 9-0 lead without any offense, relying on a fumble recovery in the endzone and a safety. East's Jejuan Bell made things interesting in the second quarter with a TD run and a 2 point conversion, putting the score at just 16-8. From that point on, though, Whetstone dominated, with Mike Haynes rushing for 200 yards. Other Monday Night Scores -- Brookhaven 75, Linden 8; Independence 34, Briggs 0; Beechcroft 54, Mifflin 0; Northland 34, Centennial 0; Eastmoor Academy 60, South 0.

Ike's winds postponed City League action.

Ike Strikes -- The powerful winds from Hurricane Ike that struck last Sunday stunned the area and left most schools out of classes for three days or more. For much of the week, nobody was thinking much about the 100 yard wars set for Friday night. The Columbus City League made an early decision to postpone all action until Monday night (9/22) at 6:30 pm, but all other action found a way to go forward, even if power had only recently been restored. There were some good old good ones around the area, and here are some highlights.

Could Pickerington Central be fighting for a title?

Neighborly Feud -- Pickerington Central 38, Pickerington North 7 -- Incredibly, this was the first matchup ever between the two sister schools who were just placed together in the OCC Ohio division this year -- and it was played before 10,000 in Crew Stadium instead of out east in P'town. It was a more enjoyable and hard fought affair than the score showed. Senior fullback and linebacker Zach Boren, who is headed to the Scarlet and Grey for next year, led the Central Tigers (5-0, 2-0) with two touchdowns. However, the game was just 7-0 a few minutes before halftime and only 17-0 after three. The North Panthers (3-2, 1-1) hung very tough at times and completed 24 passes, but most were short and ineffective in moving th ball against perhaps Region 3's best team. Olentangy 24, Marysville 21 -- A great game at Marysville (3-2, 0-2) last night, but a fourth quarter the Monarchs would like to forget. Leading 21-10 after three, Marysville gave up 2 TD passes from Justin Johnson to Tracey Davis in the final quarter, including a 5 yard toss with under a minute to play. Olentangy improves to 5-0, 2-0. The Braves have won their five games by a total of 21 points, and all by single digits. Upper Arlington 34, Worthington Kilbourne 9 -- This was supposed to be the top matchup of the night between two highly touted OCC Central teams, but it turned out one sided in favor of Upper Arlington (4-1, 2-0). The teams had not played since 2000 but are now paired together as divisional foes. Aaron Kingcade of Kilbourne (4-1, 1-1) again fought valiantly, tying the game with a 23 yard  TD run and a PAT in the first, but the Golden Bears turned on the afterburners and put the game away by halftime. Star RBs Alex Drake, Tommy Farwick and Isaac Wildermuth all scored TDs, with Wildermuth notching a second TD on a 42 yard run as well. Licking Valley 45, Heath 17 -- This battle to the east between Licking County foes was promising on paper as host Heath (4-1, 1-1) came in undefeated, boasting  atwo barrelled running attack with Cameron Ross and Kyle Barrick. However, it was OSU bound Storm Klein of Licking Valley (4-1, 2-0) who was the runaway train. Klein totalled 344 yards on the ground and scored 5 touchdowns to lead the Panthers in this MSL Ohio Division game. DeSales 38, Findlay 7 -- The Stallions (5-0) were next in line for area teams to make the journey up north to face Findlay (1-4), and like UA a few weeks back they did not come back disappointed. DeSales' Josh Kusan added three more TDs to his running total, and QB Thomas Gentile added another passing score to Ike Ariguzo. DeSales has clearly established itself as the top Division II team not only in the area, but in the state as the Stallions were coming off a huge road win down at previous No. 1 Cincinnati Anderson.

Watterson rolled again.

Other Results -- Watterson 28, Cleveland Benedictine 7 -- This was another touted game that turned into a one sided affair. It was a rematch of the 2002 Div. III state title game when the Eagles beat Benedictine for the crown after losing earlier in the year. This year, the rivalry resumed and Watterson (4-1) took control with a 14-0 halftime lead. Kevin Obyc ran for 108 yards and the Eagles' last TD. . . Canal Winchester 24, Circleville 0; Newark Catholic 21, Lakewood 6; Delaware 28, Mt. Vernon 7; Dublin Jerome 14, Olentangy Liberty 10; Westerville North 21, Westerville Central 17; Big Walnut 28, Ol. Orange 7; Westerville South 24, Dublin Scioto 20; Hilliard Darby 45, Central Crossing 7; Hilliard Davidson 35, Thomas Worthington 7; Reynoldsburg 10, Newark 3; New Albany 20, Watkins Memorial 6; Bexley 20, Whitehall 10.

Thanks for updating some of the Monday night games, wasn't sure if you'd do that or not. I have a good friend on one of the teams, we appreciate your updates.
