The 2009 USA/Today Coaches Poll Is Here!

It is college football season. Yes baseball is still going on but I chose to ignore it. I'm a Reds fan so they make it easy for me to prepare for football season early. Yesterday on August 7th, the 2009 USA/Today Coaches Poll was released. Not all fall camps have begun. Does that make sense? Well we can't do anything to change it this year so let us take a look at the rankings (1st place receiving votes in parentheses):

1. Florida (53)
2. Texas (4)
3. Oklahoma (1)
4. Southern California (1)
5. Alabama
6. Ohio State
7. Virginia Tech
8. Penn State
9. LSU
10. Ole Miss
11. Oklahoma State
12. California
13. Georgia
14. Oregon
15. Georgia Tech
16. Boise State
17. Texas Christian
18. Utah
19. Florida State
20. North Carolina
21. Iowa
22. Nebraska
23. Notre Dame
24. Brigham Young
25. Oregon State

A few things on this list that made me think.

Ohio State at #6.

I thought about this yesterday and for me Ohio State looks to be a bit too high on this list. Although they still have talent they lost a lot of experience. But when I looked at the other teams in the top 10 behind them I wondered if I'd move any of them ahead of Ohio State. I'm still thinking about that. I would probably say no at this moment.

ND @ #23.

They are ranked. It was inevitable to happen after that "mighty" bowl victory over Hawaii. If this team doesn't make it to the BCS with their schedule Charlie Weis needs to be fired. Seriously. I would also like for Notre Dame to make a BCS game for more controversy. And imagine if they go undefeated.

4 Non-BSC conference teams in top 25.

Boise State, Texan Christian, Utah and BYU are in. Is this a consolation prize for no playoff? (I promise to discuss how a playoff won't solve everything that everyone thinks it will later).

No Big East Teams.

None. Zero. For a BCS conference that is not good.

Florida not getting all #1 votes.

This may not be that big of a deal but all the hype of Florida and all that they bring back this year it was surprising to me that they did not get all 1st place votes. I feel as if Urban Meyer will take this personally. Running up the score is sure to happen more than expected this fall because of this.

These are just a few I've noticed. Let me know what you think.

Watch out for TCU. They could go undefeated if the can beat Clemson at Clemson. A playoff won't fix everything. It would be better than what we have know. I agree about OSU. Rankings this early are a joke. They should wait until like week 4 or 5. Nobody knows how these teams are going to play.

What do you mean Ohio State is ranked too high? They are the best team ever and will go undefeated until the end of time. Terrell Pryor will win three Heisman trophies and bring home three National titles. They will win by at least an average of 35 points this year because they Rock! (40 if I coached them instead of Mr. Conservative Jim Tressel) They could probably beat the Chicago Bears straight up right now because they are that good. I don't know how you cannot see any of this. You must have gone to school at the School Up North or be friends with Brent Musburger. Go Bucks! Woo-Hoo :)
