This and That in the World of Sports

Hello ColumbusSports Readers!

Currently I am on vacation in Denver, Colorado, so I will not be publishing a full fledged article this week. However, I did not want to leave you empty handed, so I put together a few pieces of commentary on a few subjects. I hope you enjoy!

B.J. Mullens- The one and done plague hits the Buckeyes, as BJ Mullens bolts for the pros after his first and only collegiate season. It’s hard to turn down the check, I get it. But I am thinking one more year and you could have made millions more in the 2010 NBA Draft Lottery. Didn’t you see how far Kousta Koufos tumbled down the draft board last year? His lack of development has shoned brightly this entire rookie season. Considering he hasn’t even played since February and just this week he was sent down to the NBDL, it is clear one more year in the collegiate ranks would have done him wonders. Mr. Mullens, you aren’t even as developed and NBA ready as he was, this is clear. Don’t get me wrong, I hope I am mistaken in my assumption and that this decision works out for the best. Though one more year of seasoning and I think the payback would have been tenfold. Good luck sir!! All of us in Buckeyeville wish you nothing but the best.

Terrell Owens- I am a certified Buffalo Bills fan of 20 years now. I experienced the highest of sports fan highs in the early to mid 1990’s. I have been experiencing the lowest of lows the last 10 years or so, ending every season with that old cliché “Next year is our year.” The Bills signing T.O. was quite shocking and initially I was pissed we would sign this perceived malcontent. Now having contemplated it since, I figure if we are going to stink and flounder in mediocrity, at least T.O. will bring us some excitement. Whether or not the excitement comes on or off the field, the sidelines or his front lawn remains to be seen. Though I have to say I wish ESPN would stop trying to blow up the fact that he isn’t at the Bills VOLUNTARY workout program. Players skipping VOLUNTARY workout programs certainly isn’t unheard of. In fact it is quite common to skip it, hence the “VOLUNTARY” part. If Mr. Owens skips mandatory camps in the future, then please ESPN make a note of it. Until then, shush and keep boring us with the endless “news” regarding the Yankees, Red Sox, Brett Favre, the Patriots, Cowboys, Lakers, Kobe and King James (I do like the Lebron talk though).

NFL Season- No, no, no, no, no to the NFL!! Would the NFL please take the players into consideration here and stop even contemplating adding more regular season games to the season?? These guys get the living crap beat out of them every game, two more regular season games will not be beneficial for anybody (except the owners bank accounts). I will touch more on this subject in the future.

Message to Don Cherry- Stop being a hypocrite and bashing Alex Ovechkin for celebrating colorfully after his goals. At this point you sound like an old, out of touch curmudgeon. I don’t understand why you feel the need to go out of your way and slam this kid every time your mug shows up on camera. Get over it already!! You say you don’t like his antics, that it’s bad for the game, and to quit drawing attention to yourself, blah blah blah. Funny coming from you, since your whole persona is about being a character and doing wacky bits to draw attention to yourself. Can you not take the fact that another personality is upstaging you? Stop being an old bitter man and enjoy Ovechkin for what he is, which is a phenomenal talent and a personality for the masses to enjoy.

That is all from me this week. I am off to hike in the Rocky Mountains. Take care ColumbusSports readers.

Re: "All of us in Buckeyeville wish you nothing but the best." - couldn't disagree with you more. The guy didn't give it his all at Ohio State and then made a horrible decision that hurt the program, himself and the future financial prospects of his family. Not smart at all if you ask me and I for one will never welcome him "back into the Buckeye basketball family".

Understandable Chaz. I think you are missing my point however. I personally think BJ is making the wrong choice to leave early for the exact same reasons you stated. However, I was trying to point out that I do not wish any ill will towards BJ for leaving and I can‘t envision that anyone else would be justified to either. Rooting for the kids demise simply because his career as a Buckeye didn’t pan out as we all hoped is a bit heartless. Even though ultimately it is his fault it didn’t reach its full potential. Now I am not insinuating that is how you feel per say, but how could you, myself or anyone else root against him for chasing his dream? It is your prerogative to root for or against BJ. I personally wouldn’t understand why anyone would root against the young man is all I am saying. Just be a spectator and watch from the sidelines if anything. His decision to leave early may be foolish in our eyes, but all we can do is wait and see what the endgame will bring.

Thanks for reading and commenting on my article Chaz. All the best!!
