Central Seniors Sign - High School FootballCoffman Quintet -- Dublin Coffman is sending five gridiron greats to Division 1-A college football. Though not technically quintuplets, these boys are brethren and dominated the Division I scene in Central Ohio this past year. The five Coffman teammates enjoyed great success in 2007 going 13-0 before falling to Ohio top rated and national #2 St. Xavier in the Div. I State semifinal. Members of the exclusive gang with their education destinations are: Mike Adams 6'8" 305 OL (Ohio State); Jake Stoneburner 6'5" 225 WR (Ohio State); Zack Stoudt 6'5" 215 QB (Louisville); Steve Gardiner 6'1" 210 LB (Michigan State) and Trey Fairchild 6'0" 180 WR (Syracuse). May we read about all of them in the sports headlines, especially the new Buckeyes. Bearcat Boys -- The University of Cincinnati grabbed some good ones from Cowtown yesterday as the college football official signing period for high school seniors commenced. Of note is Walter Stewart of Teays Valley, who was featured by columnist Michael Arace in today's Columbus Dispatch for his struggles and triumphs from foster care to the field. Stewart is a 6'5" and 200 lb. linebacker who was elected captain by his mostly white and rural teammates. Congratulations, Walter, we'll root for you. Joining Stewart at UC will be Mark Nelson (LB) of Sunbury's state champion Big Walnut Golden Eagles. On board as well will be inaugural Columbussports.com Bronze Bratwurst winner Isaiah Pead (RB) from Eastmoor Academy. Pead was a column favorite here and could be a force in the Queen City despite his small size (5'11", 195). Pead had an 11.5 yard per carry average and 39 TDs, good for Top Brat last year here, plus he has commented that he had 25 college offers. That's worth a Bronze Bratwurst if nothing. Eat up, and good luck, men!! Notable Newbies -- Otherwise there were many other impressive seniors to sign with various colleges on Wednesday, particlarly Rodney Stewart RB from Brookhaven going to the Colorado Buffaloes and the duo of B.J. Machen LB and Jeremy Ebert of Hilliard Darby heading to Georgia Tech and Northwestern respectively. Dublin Scioto's LB Josh Richardson is committed to 2007 media darling Kansas and Upper Arlington favorite Andrew Colosimo OL-TE at 6'6" and 250 will try to improve the MAC's stature at Akron. Listed at the same size but unfortuantely becoming a Wolverine is DeSales' OL Patrick Omameh. Even though you're going to the state up north, we'll pull for you Patrick. Drew Stevens of Olentangy (6'3" 215 FB/LB) at least is heading to the Michigan State Spartans instead. Officers and Gentlemen -- The service academies are getting some fine young Central Ohio footballers for the 2008 incoming class. Near and dear to my heart is Army (West Point) as my father was class of '63 -- however Army has no Columbus boys this year. Instead, we have three class acts heading out to Air Force and Navy. Josh Fitzpatrick of SeSales (6'3" 220) DL will go to Annapolis, while Connor Dietz QB from Hilliard Davidson and Ross Fleming LB of Olentangy Liberty are off into the wild blue yonder with Air Force. We salute you! Dartmouth Dandies? -- Well, the obscure New Hampshire Ivy League school apparently has eyes on Columbus this year. St. Charles LB Grant Palmer (6'4" 260) is headed with a commanding ACT score to the prestigious institution (the same one that handed me a rejection notice in 1985). Also, Chris Crockett RB of Columbus Academy has a standing offer from Dartmouth that he is contemplating. Crockett, however, was out most of 2007 with a knee injury and has been heavily into hoops. His praises have been sung from time to time in the Roundball Roundup column on this site, and he is checking the basketball barometer before committing.
