Bodies Breaking Down

Hey Columbus Sports Fans!

July and August are the times during baseball season where players’ bodies start breaking down physically. There is a little more than a month left in the minor league season and it feels like we’ve been playing for a year straight. Almost three quarters of our team is in the training room before or after the games complaining about something. A combination of the heat, humidity, and the wear and tear of playing pretty much everyday takes a toll on the body and the mind. I am guilty of being one of those guys in the training room everyday, but in order to stay healthy, you gotta do what you gotta do.

A big part of the problem, which most people don’t realize, is we have a demanding schedule that changes everyday. For example, we had a double header because of a rainout the previous night in Bradenton, FL starting at 5PM on a Saturday. Our games didn’t get finished until 11PM, which doesn’t seem all that bad. However, we still had to shower and get everything together for an hour and a half bus ride back to Dunedin. Then, you have to add more time in there for getting food and driving back to the apartments. Now we’re talking getting to bed definitely after 1AM. The funny part is we have to be back at the field at 9AM for another trip to Bradenton. Even if you’re looking at the fact that we might get a maximum 8 hours of sleep for the night, you have to also consider the two games we just played, garbage food we had to eat at the same time people were leaving bars, and another game in 95 degree heat with humidity.

Personally, things have been going pretty well in July. There were a couple outings where I gave up a run or two, but overall it’s been a decent month. Feel free to check out www.milb.com for stats and profiles of any minor league player, especially all the former Buckeyes.
