Green Wave roll over Vikings

Newark Green Wave defeats Academy 23-7

by David Burnworth

Last night in Newark at White Field, Academy battled Newark Catholic in front of a small and quiet crowd. Both teams knew their playoff of chances were on the line. Neither team seemed very vocal as they let their play speak for them.

Josh Hill would be picked off by MILES (HIT MAN) RICHARDSON with 10:44 left in the opening quarter. With 9:53 showing on the clock Newark Catholic was facing a third and seven Kevin (THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD) Cox threw a pass in the direction of Chris (THREE POINT) Leibold, who just missed making a nice catch.

THE Newark Catholic defense would shut down the potent offense of the Vikings forcing a punt and on the return Richardson showed a little hidden speed as he took the punt to the Academy thirty-yard-line. He totaled twenty-eight-yards on the return. Then with 6:03 left in the hard hitting opening quarter DEAN(MEAN MACHINE) MOORE used some nice line work to take the ball down to the Vikings one-yard-line. 5:43 showed on the clock when Aaron (GROUND AND POUND) Shook plowed in from a yard out. The point after kick was no good leaving the score,6-0. Newark Catholic needed six-plays to go the thirty-yards needed for the score.

Casey (BIG THUNDER) Cunningham lowered the big boom on Hill as he threw him to the ground for a five-yard-loss, with 3:38 left in the quarter. After forcing a punt Newark Catholic got a forty-five-yard run from Shook, with 1:35 showing on the clock. The drive fizzled out and the Green Wave had to settle on a twenty-one-yard field goal by first year kicker, Garrett Clark. This would be Clrak‚s first field goal of the season giving the Green Wave a, 9-0 lead.

Big Thunder would get to the Vikings ball carrier with 10:40 left in the half holding the runner to a one-yard gain. Then with 9:33 left in the half Britt Wilder teamed up with Lane(WHITE LIGHTING) Hartfield to stuff Hill holding him to zero-yard on the play. Josh (BIG TRAIN) Hendershot would get to Austin Peterman, holding the hard running back to a one-yard gain, with 8:45 left in the half.

Newark Catholic looked to have a big pass play when Cox let go of a nicely thrown pass in the direction of his wide receiver but at the last second Mitchell Slutsky batted the pass away forcing a Green Wave punt, with 651 showing on the clock.

Peterman went up the gut for a nice sixteen-yard gain as he saw a little creased and hit the whole hard. The Green Wave defense shut the Vikings drive down soon after forcing another punt.

Newark Catholic would be forced to punt the ball right back on their ensuing drive. The snap would be bad forcing Clark to field the ball in a awkward way and as he did so his knee touched the ground giving the Vikings the ball at the Green Wave twenty-five.

The Vikings needed only four-plays to light up the scoreboard. One that fourth play Peterman took the ball four-0yards for the score. The point after by Anthony Ciminello cut the lead to,9-7.

Cox not known as a runner would do his best to prove that fact wrong when he took off on a nineteen-yard run on third and two, with 3:45 left in the close first half. The Cox found Clark open for a pass that covered fifty-five-yards when all was said and done. Clark was big-time on this play giving his team a big boost just when it needed one in a huge way. Shook would go nine-yards for another Newark Catholic score with just thirty-three-seconds left in the half. Clark would connect on the point after kick increasing the lead to,16-7.

The half came to a close when Shook took Peterman down for a two-yard-loss.

Just twenty-seven-seconds into the third quarter Jordan Hoffman got to Cox for a eight-yard loss.A short time later Cox would be forced to run and after picking up four-yards he took a big-time hit from John Durell. A Newark Catholic punt would follow.

THE Newark Catholic defense got good pressure on the Vikings quarterback forcing him to throw the ball a little sooner then he wanted to and it cost him in a big way when Matthew (MISTER. Consistent) Lewis picked off the pass.

Cox would hook up with Leibold for a fifty-eight-yard score. Leibold caught the ball and then left everyone in his tracks. Clark tacked on the point after kick giving Green Wave a,23-7 lead.

Hendershot would get his named called over the loud speaker again when he recovered a Viking fumble, with 1:47 left in the third. The quarter came to a close when Wilder got to Hoffman for a one-yard-loss.

Richardson would come oh so close on a pick with 10:18 left in the game as the defense for the Green Wave kept up its solid play. The Newark Catholic line came up huge when it held the Viking runner to no gain on fourth and one, with 9:22 left. Shook would add one more nice run with 7:57 left picking up thirteen-yards on the play. Cedric Brown tipped a pass away from a Viking receiver with 4:32 left in the game. Brown just missed making a great pick on the play.
