Shadyside slips by Zanesville Rosecrans

Shadyside made the drive to Zanesville last night to do battle with Rosecrans, both teams enter with a 3-1 record. Shadyside was coming in fresh off a win over a solid Wheeling Central Catholic out of West Virginia, while the Rosecrans were coming in after tasting defeat for the first time in 2008 by undefeated Bridgeport.

The Rosecrans had only twenty players dressed which made me wonder if they could last all game long against the Tigers and their much larger roster. Shadyside would get a fifty-yard gain when their talented quarterback, David Bonar hooked up with, 6-3-200 wide receiver Nathan Butts, with 5:33 left in a tightly contested first quarter. Then with 4:19 left in the quarter Brandon Elliott, a 5-9-170 pound lighting quick running back picked up ten-yards on a very hard run. Senior fullback Johnny Merryman would cap off the sixty-three-yard seven-play drive when he powered his way in from a yard out. The point after kicked was good by Tyler Cline, making the score, 7-0 Shadyside, with 3:07 left in the quarter.

The first quarter came to a close when David Vaughn sacked Sean Pottermeyer, the senior quarterback for Rosecrans.

Rosecrans would punt the ball with 11:06 left in the half and the Tigers Dylan Kimble would fumble the punt and Zack Hill pounced on it for the home team on the seventeen-yard-line of the Tigers.

Pottermeyer would be sacked by Marion Liberati and Matt Furbee for a short loss, with 10:10 remaining in the half. Rosecans appeared to settle for a thirty-three-yard field goal by Jordon Dillon, but a penalty on the Tigers gave the home team a first and goal. Dillon, who does everything for Rosecrans plunged in from a yard out to close the home team too within one. The point after kick was missed leaving this one a one point game, with 8:34 left in the half.

Bonar would hook up with Butts on a nice pass that covered nearly twenty-yards, with 7:42 showing on the clock. Bonar tried to go down field again a short time later, but his pass was picked off by, Pottmeyer. The ensuing drive went no where for the home team and they were forced to punt the ball back to the Tigers.

The Tigers found themselves facing a fourth and seven, with 4:02 left in the half when Boar dropped back to throw only to have his pass batted down by a leaping, Pottmeyer.

Pottmeyer would connect with Mark Kocoloski, a sure handed senior wide receiver for a first down, with 3:21 left on the clock. With just 12.6 seconds left in the half Jordon Dillon, went, seventeen-yards for a score putting his team up 12-7. A two-point pass play failed keeping the score, 12-7 Rosecrans.

The half came to an end when Bonar was sacked by Dillon.

The Tigers would end a ten-play-seventy-one drive when Johnny Merryman went three-yards untouched for a score. The extra point kick increased the Tigers lead to, 14-12, with 7:40 left in the quarter.

The Tigers using some great play action got a sixteen-yard completion from Bonar to Merryman, with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers fumble the ball with 10:07 left in the game and Josh Kehler from Rosecrans came up with it. The Tigers defense would get the ball back to its offense forcing a Rosecrans punt a short time later.

Brandon Elliott would pick up ten-yards using his cat like quickness, with 6:31 left in the game. A few seconds later Elliott would run for twelve-yards as he seemed to be getting stronger as the game came near its end. Then with 5:50 left on the clock THE NEWARK CATHOLIC FAN PLAYER OF THE GAME BRANDON ELLIOTT would hit pay dirt from four-yards out. The point after kick made the score, 21-12 Tigers.

A fumble by Shadyside with 2:46 left was recovered by Kohler and then with 2:31 left in this one David Vaughn sacked Pottmeyer for a six-yard loss.
