Newark Catholic digs down deep to defeat Lakewood 21-6

Tonight in Hebron the Newark Catholic came in limping off of a 42-0 hammering by Granville last week, while the Lancers were hoping to taste victory for the first time this season.

Matthew Lewis would take the opening kickoff out to the Newark Catholic thirty-eight-yard line giving the Green Wave good field position to start the game. Kevin (THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD) Cox would find Lewis wide open for what would have been a nice gain but Lewis had the ball hit his hands and fell to the ground, with 11:07 showing on the clock. Just a few seconds later Cox would connect with MILES (THE HIT MAN) RICHARDSON for a first down. Then with 1:14 left in the fast paced opening quarter Cox would end a six-play forty-five-yard drive when he hit Richardson for a twenty-seven-yard score. Garrett Clark made the point after giving the Green Wave a, 7-0 lead.

The Lancers would end the quarter with a nice run by Joe Bowman who went up the gut for a first down.

Lakewood would get a nice run by Eric Carr with 3:16 left in the half. Carr would go up the gut for fourteen-yards by breaking tackles with ease. Facing a fourth and eight on the same drive with 1:07 left in the half Jordon Grey with team up with the very talented Ryan Davis for a big first down pass. With forty-seven seconds left in the half Grey again teamed up with Davis for a ten-yard Lancer touchdown. The point after failed and the teams went into the locker room with Newark Catholic clinging to a.7-6 lead.

The Lancers would fumble the ball with 11:44 left in the third quarter and Miles Richardson pounced on it giving Newark Catholic the ball. Just forty-four seconds later Richards would take in a Cox pass and pick up a little more than fifty-yards. From there running back Jake Nelson would go the final yard to put Newark Catholic up13-6. Clark increased the lead to, 14-6 with his point after kick.

Grey, not known for being a passer would throw the ball down field to Christian Grosse for a long gain, with 8:36 left in the third quarter. Grey would drop back to throw again with 8:05 showing on the clock but this time Luke Webster planted him into the ground for a big loss. Grey would be picked off by Richardson with 7:26 left on the clock.

Cox would hit Lewis for a twelve-yard gain with 7:17 left in the action packed third quarter. Cox had a guy wide opened but waited a second to long to throw the ball giving Grosse just enough time to make a huge pick killing the Newark Catholic drive with 5:28 remaining in the quarter.

The Lancers offensive line would open up another hole, giving Bowman enough room to pick up another Lancer first down. Bowman ran hard each time he touched the ball as did all of the backs for Lakewood.

With 11:49 remaining in what turned out to be a very tight game Cox with team up with Matthew MISTER. CONSISTENCY) Lewis for a big twenty-yard gain. The drive would end as the Lancers defense tightened up once again.

Lane (WHITE LIGHTING) Hartfield would bust into the Lancers back field getting Carr for a short loss, with 9:15 left in the game

Needing a score to close out things Newark Catholic would call on THE NEWARK CATHOLIC FAN PLAYER OF THE GAME DEAN(MEAN MACHINE)MOORE who responded with a forty-seven-yard run made possible by the play of the offensive line known as THE GREAT WALL. Clark closed out the scoring with the point after kick making the score, 21-6.

Lakewood would get a nice pass from Chad Auber to Eric Carr for a twenty-six-yard gain with 5:24 left in the contest. The drive would soon fizzle out as the Newark Catholic defense flexed its muscles once again.

Jake Nelson with aid from The Great Wall was able to pick up eighteen-yards with 3:07 left and then with 1:03 left Newark Catholic would get a pick by Jake Nelson sealing a much needed win for Newark Catholic over a very game Lakewood squad.
