Of Buckeyes and baseballJust a few musings about some sports topics from the past week. Antonio Henton - It was certainly no surprise to see him transfer, and Georgia Southern should be a great fit for him, back to his home state and reuniting with his coach from high school. I remember talking with a friend the day Terrelle Pryor signed with the Buckeyes and saying that's the last we'll ever see of Antonio around here. It made no sense for him to stay, the only surprise was that it took him so long to announce it. I guess he wanted to stay long enough to see if Todd Boeckman tore up his knee in spring practice, as that was about the only chance he had of getting on the field much this year. I wish him the best of luck down south, let's just hope he's more careful about who he talks to on street corners down there. Football recruits - The Buckeyes 2009 football recruiting class is already up to 23, an amazingly high number for this early in the process. By all accounts it's also going to be one of the best classes in the country, but what else is new for Tressel's staff? This is definitely "the good old days" we're living through, and hopefully everyone that calls themselves a Buckeye fan realizes it. The morons that call for Tressel to be fired after he loses a national championship game should have their Buckeye flags permanently stuffed in their mouths. Indians and Reds - another "Battle for Ohio" this weekend that no one except a few diehards is paying any attention to. Both teams have disappointed this year and sit way back in their respective divisions, although the Indians may have some semblance of hope to at least make things interesting if they can get Carmona, Hafner and Martinez back and contributing. Longer term, Reds fans should be excited about the great pool of young talent they have, and expect Cincinnati to start contending as soon as next year. The Tribe also still has a lot of talent on the roster, but players like Hafner and Martinez and Garko now have question marks attached to their future, and with the imminent departure of C.C. Sabathia, Cleveland has to be very careful with the moves they make in the next 9 months if they want to field the contending team year in and year out that everyone expected of this group after last season. Kosta Koufos - The guy cost himself millions of guaranteed dollars and another year to enjoy what should be one of the best times of anyone's life, a year he can never get back. And he still thinks leaving college after one year was a smart decision? Obviously he has the right to choose for himself, but he got some very bad advice and made a decision that I think he'll come to regret. I hope he enjoys himself out in Utah under the very strict tutelage of head coach Jerry Sloan. John Groce - a lot of fans may not be familiar with his name, but Groce has been Thad Matta's right hand man for the past 8 years, a very important part of Matta's staff both on the floor and in recruiting. Now that Groce is leaving his "assistant head coach" position to be the head coach at Ohio University, Matta is faced with an important challenge in replacing him. He's got some great candidates to choose from, including a few on his current staff, but it's the type of position where you won't see an obvious impact right away, it will only be seen (for better or worse) in the longer term as the season progresses and the accumulation of many smaller decisions build up and contribute to either wins or losses on the floor.
